Israel tops the global cleantech index
22/07/2014
Israel ranked best of 40 countries for providing the best conditions for environmentally friendly innovation, according to Cleantech Group and the World Wildlife Fund.

Israel was ranked first among 40 countries for providing the best conditions for "cleantech," or "environmentally friendly," innovation, a survey by Cleantech Group and the World Wildlife Fund released at the end of June said.

Finland and the United States were No. 2 and 3, according to 2014 Global Cleantech Innovation Index, which ranked Israel No. 2 in its previous survey two years ago.

“The country generates the culture, education and ‘chutzpah’ necessary to breed innovation, plus it has the survival instincts to manage a resource-constrained geography,” the report said.

Mr. Avi Friedman, who chairs the cleantech committee of the Israel Advanced Technology Industries trade association, welcomed the ranking but warned the government isn’t supportive.

“Ministries in Israel haven’t recognized the potential, and state support for technology development, especially in the early stages and in integrating innovations into Israeli power and water infrastructure is poor and ineffective,” he said.
