India and Israel plan to celebrate 25 years of diplomatic ties in 2017 with high-level visits, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj told Parliament this week. Israel, which is believed to be one of PM Modi's favourite countries, has yet to host him for a visit with the possible timing for the same a source of intense speculation among Modi watchers.

In an answer to Parliament, Swaraj described Israel in very different terms than other countries in the region. "There are considerable synergies between the two countries... Israel is a functional democracy and its economy is forward looking and gels well with our own flagship programmes, including Make In India, Digital India... and the National Agriculture Market initiative," Swaraj said.

The MEA statement comes a couple of weeks after India was criticised by analysts for voting in favour of a Unesco decision to deny Jewish links to Temple Mount and West Wall in the old city of Jerusalem.
